Type Locality and Naming

This formation is mainly in the western portion (e.g., Adrar and Hohd sub-basins) of the Taoudeni Basin, which a vast intracratonic sedimentary basin spanning parts of Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Guinea.

Lithology and Thickness

The Cambrian Nouatil Gr of the Taoudeni Basin is composed of terrigenous sediments deposited in a range of depositional environments (Pitfield et al., 2004). The Nouatil Gr is made up of sandstones, with a thin carbonate section characterizing the middle of the group. The Kreb En Naga Gr is the Nouatil Gr equivalent in the Hank Subbasin and about 280m in thickness, with no known equivalents in the Hodh-Afolle Subbasin.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably overlies the Teniagouri Gr (Nioro Gr in Hohl subbasin) (late Ediacaran depositional hiatus – Martin-Monge et al., 2016)

Upper contact

Unconformably overlain by the Oujeft Gr ((late Cambrian depositional hiatus – Martin-Monge et al., 2016))

Regional extent

This formation is mainly in the western portion (e.g., Adrar-Hohd sub-basin) of the Taoudeni Basin
